This edition is slightly different as it's more of a video blog.
I want to share my interview with Mark Williams of Fathers Reaching Out and founder of Dad's Mental Health Matters.
Mark Williams was awarded Local Hero at the Pride of Britain Awards and Inspirational Father of the year in 2012. He was also shortlisted for an award with Mind Media the same year. In 2016 he was chosen to meet the Royal Family on Worlds Mental Health Day 2016.
I first met Mark during the filming of one of my regular parent/family coach slots on Sky TV's The Chrissy B Show (The UK's only TV show dedicated to mental health and wellbeing). Mark was being interviewed sharing his personal journey with Post Natal Depression and we hit it off straight away. Since then we have kept in touch and I have contributed during his regular Twitter "chats" on supporting mental health in fathers.
The video blog was part of 21 recorded interviews that Mark organised as part of raising awareness of International Fathers Mental Health Day on 19th June this year.
While considerable media and popular attention is devoted to maternal mental health issues, there has been less focus on the experiences of dads. As a mother of sons and someone who has experienced the death of my first born shortly after birth I feel passionate about this issue being raised. There was much more support for me as a woman that for my husband and I don't feel that has changed much.
International Fathers’ Mental Health Day (IFMHD) is an annual global event first launched in 2016 which gives voice to issues unique to men as they transition to fatherhood—their strengths, difficulties, and needs.
